A lorem ipsum generator creates blocks of meaningless placeholder text so you can fill a design with realistic-length copy before the real words exist. The tool above builds fresh placeholder text in your browser: pick paragraphs, sentences or words, set a count, and copy or download the result. Nothing is sent anywhere.
What is lorem ipsum?
Lorem ipsum is scrambled, pseudo-Latin filler text that has been the standard dummy copy of the printing and design industries for centuries. Because it reads as nonsense, it lets you judge a layout โ line length, paragraph rhythm, heading spacing, how text wraps around images โ without being distracted by the meaning of the words. Designers reach for it constantly when the final copy is not ready but the page still needs to be built and reviewed.
The passage is loosely based on a first-century BC work by the Roman writer Cicero, chopped up and altered so heavily that it no longer forms real sentences. Most people recognise its familiar opening:
Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit,
sed do eiusmod tempor incididunt ut labore et dolore magna aliqua.
How this generator works
The tool draws from a fixed list of Latin-like words and assembles them into sentences and paragraphs of randomised length. Each time you press Generate or Regenerate, the sentence and paragraph sizes are re-rolled, so you get natural-looking variation rather than one repeated block. You can tick the option to begin with the classic “Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet” opening, or leave it off for fully random output. Everything happens locally in the browser โ there is no API call and no external service involved.
Choosing a unit and count
| Unit | Best for |
|---|---|
| Paragraphs | Body copy, article mockups, long-form layouts and content blocks. |
| Sentences | Card descriptions, captions, tooltips and short summaries. |
| Words | Headlines, button labels, menu items and tight character-limited fields. |
Set the count to match how much space you need to fill. For a hero heading you might want five words; for a blog template, four or five paragraphs.
Common use cases
- Filling a website or app wireframe before the real content is written.
- Testing how a typeface, line height or column width feels at real length.
- Populating a CMS template, email design or slide deck for a client review.
- Seeding a database or component library with realistic-looking sample text.
When not to use it
Placeholder text is a design aid, not a shipping product. Never leave lorem ipsum in a live page: search engines can index it, screen-reader users hear meaningless strings, and stray filler that survives to production looks careless. Treat it as scaffolding and swap in real copy before launch. It is safe to reuse freely, though โ lorem ipsum carries no copyright, so client mockups, templates and demos are all fine.
A worked example
Suppose you are building a three-card feature row and want each card to hold two sentences of description. Choose Sentences, set the count to 2, untick the classic opening so each card reads a little differently, and generate three times โ once per card. Paste each result into your mockup, and you instantly see whether two sentences fit the card height or overflow, all without waiting on the copywriter. Because the generator runs entirely in your browser, you can repeat this as many times as you like, offline, with no limits.
